The Trent Severn Gateway!

June 9th- We finally crossed under the gateway to the Trent. What an interesting and twisty turny trip this has been. I am supplying the link to everything you every wanted to know about the waterway as it is much too much for me to type here. But it is an interconnected system of several regions. It is also full of hazards for the boat. Tree stumps, sunken ships, shoals, etc. So far, it seems pretty well marked and the water is high, soooo🤞

We had a pretty easy day one. We passed through 6 locks and stopped in Frankford. It was a super long day! We did finally get this blog out that night and we met a couple from Addison VT. That was fun. We lost them on Saturday, but it was good meeting them and sharing information about mutual friends and acquaintances.

If you look carefully at the middle pic, it‘s a tear drop dwelling. Pretty cool.

Saturday June 10th- We did 12 Locks, 44 miles and 10 hours!. We were beat. We stayed in Hastings at lock 18 on their free wall and met up with some people that we had met in Trenton at the marina. I am guessing we will see them again along this journey. Other than that, we ate at a little pub that was on lock 18 and that was about it.

Sunday June 11th- The weather was beautiful. Absolutely perfect. Sunshine , no wind and 70 degrees. We only did 1 very small lock at the end of our day after a run of about 40 miles. We knew the weather was going to get worse, so we went to the Peterborough Marina and are still there today. We passed through the first of the lakes, Rice Lake on this journey.

After we arrived at Peterborough, we walked through the town and found a nice restaurant. It is a very cute little town. We ate at Gertis. Gertis is at the beginning of the Cafe district and it appears to be an area that is up and coming.

We arrived at the restaurant - after calling- and the doors were locked… 😳. We started to leave and they opened the doors and brought us in. We were literally the only customers. At first we were a little nervous, but any trepidation quickly resolved as we were treated to an excellent meal and service in a very enlisting atmosphere. I guess it was just a slow night…..

I’m having some issues with Wix photos. So, here goes with captions.

-The first you see is a step or a flight lock. It is lock 16 and 17 on the waterway. Healeys Falls. It is 48 feet down and you basically go up one lock- and then proceed directly into the next one. In this case it was two locks, but last year we did a flight of 6 into Ottawa. It’s quite beautiful looking down. Here, we are in lock 16 and then you can see the doors from lock two . Which will open once we get up to lock 17. Then you see the more normal wooden doors in lock 2.

-Other captions are things we saw along the river.

Canadians love their country and flags and red chairs were in abundance. I love it!

-The railroad tracks is just because it looked cool. It was in downtown Peterborough.

-At times, we really felt that we were down south in Louisiana. I expected to see an alligator anytime. 😂

-There is one of us at dinner and one of Mike’s Fish n Chips. I had a Power Bowl but no pic.. It was awesome though

Today, it is raining, really raining. We knew it was going to rain, but really thought it would eventually clear. We so wanted to go see the Peterborough lift lock in action before we went through it. It’s also just a cool town with a myriad of bike trails that we were hoping to go exploring on.

Instead, we are trying to get caught up on things. Wix and the Ipad don’t always play together and internet service and cell service is making working on the blog tricky, but I wanted to get something out today. I am becoming a big fan of wanting to try StarlinK.

Dogs on a rainy day… we all feel like a little like drowned rats today. 💧🌧️

Tonight we will be eating in . We are doing about 50/50 out vs in. Last year, we ate in about 90% of the time, but this year, we are starting to find some interesting places along the towns worth visiting …

until the next post- where hopefully we will have traveled through the iconic Peterborough lift lock. More to come…

Sun’s back after a very rainy day, which was nice to catchup on things. Inching our way forward😎. The “Boys” are enjoying the trip also, and barking at my every move!
