Today we made it to the Kawarthas region and the Peterborough lift lock. It is an amazing feat of engineering and unfortunately, Mike and I figured out that being on the phone headsets didn’t allow such great picture taking. We know now for the next two iconic locks!! This lock lifts you in a bathtub 65 feet in the air before releasing you up river. It does this in about 90 seconds too. Before you know it, you have been raised a whopping 65 feet in the air in your boat! It is all done with 1 foot of water displacement in the opposite basin. Built in 1904 and the highest lift of its kind in North America. What a feat. A link is included if you want to read more about it.
I wish we could have watched it in action prior to going up, but with yesterdays rain and then today no one was ahead of us…..
Kirkfield is a similar lock, ( smaller) so hopefully there we will be able to video the action.
Above photos:
I have 2 maps now. One is just honed in on the days journey and the other is the entire journey.
All other pictures from above are of the going through the lock.
1 is entering
2 is looking up at the other basin
3 is looking down at the other basin
4 is looking out 65 feet in the air.
5 is actually before lift up so a little out of order..
Other than that, we went through 7 locks and a whopping 10 miles today and tied up on lock 26 in Lakefield. Tonight, we will explore it a bit and report back. We hear it’s a cute town. As far as lock 26, it’s beautiful, feels like you are in the country side.
On a good note, we are more than halfway through the locks as there are 43 total. We are not halfway through the system though. We are around mile 100 and there are 240 miles in the waterway. More open water coming though, so it should balance out.
It we have enough cell service, we will post again tomorrow. Otherwise, we are signed out for the day. What a beautiful one at that. 🌞😎
Photos below:
1. is just a really cute depiction of the entire Trent Severn waterway.
2. Some geese along the way. I know that overall, the bird population is in big trouble, but I can assure you that the Canadian Geese in Canada are doing quite well.
3 and 5 information about the fountain at Peterborough and the fountain again…
4 is just a cool tribute to fireman in peterborough
6 and 7 are where we are tonight at lock 26
