Baie Fine, What can we say?

As you can tell, we haven‘t traveled very far this weekend. Friday, we made our way to Baie Fine and were so excited to be in this natural Fjord. It’s quite beautiful! It is white guartz with green pines and is such a great contrast. I’m not sure it compares to the fjords we hear about in Europe, but none the less, it is quite beautiful. We meandered 8 miles to arrive at “ The Pool” this is at the very end of the fjord and a very popular anchoring spot. On this quiet Friday, we had 2 other boats in the cove. The cove is peaceful and serene. It is supposed to have a public dock for easy access to land and to a hiking trail.

One of the places that this hiking trail will take you is to Topaz Lake, known for its crystal clear topaz color.

Shortly after arriving, we decided to go ahead and get the hike out of the way. 2 comments on this before I mention what happened from there.

  1. I love to hike. We don’t hike enough anymore.

  2. I had heard the bugs were bad in Georgian Bay and even bought some deet spray just in case. I never use deet, but figured for a few days, it wouldn't be the end all.

We took off in the dingy ready for our hike- it’s not an easy one, but not exactly tough either. Steep and rocky. Vt like…maybe an advanced beginner with a little intermediate popped in.

There is no public dock and where the public dock once was , a large boat has taken over the easy access to the trail. Ok, we just dingied a little farther over And walked through some weeds. Not A huge deal.

🦟🦟🦟🦟First thing that happens is that I was swarmed by mosquitos and I mean swarmed. Mike offered to go back to the boat to get the Deet. I said no, it was too big of a deal. Well, it was a very big deal to not go back. This turned out to be the absolute worst hike of my life and I used to hike a lot.

I was seriously miserable as the mosquitos made a smorgasboard out of me and the deatheater horseflies just came in for the kill. Over and over again.

By the time, we got to the lake, I was done. Didn't care. While Mike had some issues, he had nothing as serious as me ( always goes that way with the bugs) and he was in a much better mood. He hiked down to the lake and we then continued to hike out to a rock where we could look back over our boats in the pool.

I just continued to be miserable and thought maybe I was turning into a complete woos, which made me feel more miserable. I am used to mosquitoes and horseflies, but this was like the Jurassic Park version.

1 and 4 - Lake Topaz

2 and 6 us during the hike. Me trying really hard to smile.

3. The Beginning of the DEATH EATER tunnel

5. Looking back on the pool at Baie Fine

We completed the hike and got back to the boat. There was a breeze and a reprieve from the mosquitoes and death eaters flys.

We met a couple in one of the other boats and had a lovely evening. We all agreed to do it again today.

It was 10:00 and just at the dusk period. I took the dogs back to the trail with death eaters to do their final walk and raced back to the boat. Within those 15 minutes, our boat was overtaken with mosquitoes and black flies. I raced inside with the dogs and I am not lying when I say 300 mosquitoes raced in with us!!!

UGHH>. We spent from 10:30 until midnight killing bugs and more bugs. I mean, this was war and I was in for the Kill. NO mercy! No trying to show them the way out of the boat to go finish their lives. I smooshed them on the ceiling, on the windows, doors, curtains, .. It didn’t matter. All the while I was vowing I wanted the hell out of Baie Fine.

Sorry, no pics to share of the massacre that ensued last night.

This morning I woke up, took the dogs to shore, got attacked, returned to the boat and vowed not to be that miserable person and suck it up for our second night.

Around 11:00 our new friends dingied over and told us it was too buggy and they were going home. They are locals mind you.

It took me about 30 seconds to request to Mike that we follow suit and get the hell out of this fjord! After all, I’m not really the woos I thought I was, plus, I have welts and sores everywhere. Those suckers got me through my shirt and even my hair. They left sores on my head. Death to the Death Eaters!

Mike agreed, and we took off. We chose a marina as the new friends told us that any anchorage was going to be tough in this hot muggy weather. Didn’t take much to convince us not to try this experiment again today.

We are still killing mosquitoes on the boat!

All pictures of Baie Fine, except 5 which is topaz Lake again.

7 and 8 are in Baie fine, but what you see is a camp and swing bridge to the outhouse. Thought that was kind of cool. 💩

Now that we are gone, am I glad we did Baie Fine? Yes. Am I am glad Mike encouraged me to finish the hike to Lake Topaz? Yes.

They were beautiful (Reminded me a smidgen of Lake Tahoe actually) and we had a few wonderful hours last night with new friends.

If anyone else wants to see this natural wonder, I would recommend a local cruise ship. It takes you there, gives you two hours to enjoy the sights and then you leave the deatheaters behind!

1 and 2, your cruise awaits you.

3. Just before Little Current

Today we moved just 22 miles to Little Current. It is a sleepy little town and has more shag flies than anything else. Those, I will show the way out. Tomorrow we will move to Gore Bay and sit out some bad weather. .

I will update when I know more about that and thanks everyone for following us!

Keep you all posted.

The mosquito encounter sounded terrifying. I do not like any blood sucking insects
